Problems faced by farmers

Stock management was previously done on paper, which made it extremely difficult to keep track of the overall amount of stock, as well as the proportion of sizes and whether the stock was ready for sale. Ken also needed a way to track osyters growth rate, as well as death/disease rate to determine which origins are better to purchase from. Lastly, an issue arose when recording data in the farms as the paper would get wet.

The Solution

Digital solutions include:

New feature that track the history of each batch of oysters to determine which ones had good growth rates and were healthy, and which ones were weak/unhealthy.

Improved color-coded system such as, FarmView which allows you to record where exactly your oysters are deployed on the water and Grading where oysters are measured and recorded, then sold or deployed back on the water

New Dashboard & Reports with oneDrive integration which provides clearer data insights.

Our Process

Together, with Ken, we took on the challenge of transforming an 8-year-old software into a modern and relevant farm management software for the market. By adopting Kiratech's Incremental Production Development Cycle and with many technical scoping meetings and hard work, we were able to address technical issues while adding new features that enable farmers and customers to track their inventory in real-time, and review inventory and profits with the new color-coded stock analysis, any moment with just a fingertip away. Our team efforts were rewarded with a $100k grant and the opportunity to participate on researches with SARDI and PIRSA, which provided us with valuable insights for further enhancing the software.

About The
Entrepreneur

Ken has 20 years of IT experience in Australia, ranging from programming, system and database design, to project management and consulting. He was the Managing Director of SRA Information Technology, where he led a significant expansion. He also founded Choice IT, which was later sold to a public listed company. He made a seachange into aquaculture on Kangaroo Island, where he established a multi-species integrated farm, shop, and R&D operation. He has been a long-term industry representative and a keen innovator in restorative aquaculture. By combining IT and aquaculture, he developed a world-leading farmer-centric shellfish inventory management software for multi-species management and collaboratives.
